Finding (or Creating) a Regenerative
Job with Real Impact
At RegenIntel we do two things.
We offer expert consulting services to organisations whose goal it is to become genuinely regenerative. And we run educational programmes uniquely designed to teach and instill a regenerative mindset and skillset into our Fellows.
Both of those services have their own intrinsic value. But they also come with the cascading benefit of, on the one hand, creating more climate jobs and, on the other, helping our Fellows find (or create) one.
We would love to welcome each and every aspiring member of the regenerative economy to our programmes. The realities on the ground however are that there are always going to be more people who for one reason or another can’t benefit directly from our instructors.
This guide was written to somewhat fill that gap.
What do we mean by “regenerative job”?
First, what do we mean by “regenerative job” exactly?
We define a regenerative system as one that places life and well-being at the center of all our decision-making. A system that is comprised of interconnected social, economic, and natural systems that exists to ensure life - in all its forms - thrive in abundance across time.
A regenerative job therefore plays a role in transforming the economic and social systems we currently live in into regenerative systems.
Working in sectors such as clean energy and regenerative agriculture are ‘obvious’ go-tos. But that’s not the only route.
There is scope—and need—for regenerative work in every industry so you may still follow your passion and in the process “multi-solve” for regenerative and sustainable outcomes.
To help you on this journey the next few sections lay out some options for your search that go beyond the usual job boards.
That said though, let’s start with the best job boards for climate and regenerative work.
Job Boards
There are many job boards available nowadays focusing exclusively on sustainability jobs but you will find very often that there is a lot of overlap between sites so we are including here what we consider to be the most effective.
US & CANADA
Climate and sustainability job postings with a focus on North America:
EUROPE & UK
Climate and sustainability job postings with a European and UK focus:
REMOTE
International jobs in climate that are available as fully remote positions:
Beyond Sustainability
Although we subscribe to a holistic definition of sustainability, in practice, when you are job hunting, the term has come to refer to a relatively narrow set of roles. Typically roles in the realms of decarbonisation, carbon capture, and clean energy production.
These are by no means the only way of making a meaningful contribution. In fact, you can often have a larger impact by working in areas that can have a positive, cascading effect on sustainability such as education, policy, poverty, and health.
NON-PROFIT
Charities and non-governmental organisations enable activism, policy change, conservation, restoration, and human wellbeing.
ADJACENT IMPACT
These job boards provide opportunities to work on other significant existential risks facing humanity.
Consulting and Freelancing
A variety of companies and organisations are increasingly requiring climate work done — such as impact reports, lifecycle assessments, compliance reports, and regulatory preparation — but are not in a position to hire full time staff to work in that sector. Freelancing and consulting are a great way to tap into that market and build yourself a reputation in the space.
VETTED EXPERTS
These sites connect companies with vetted sustainability and ESG experts.
GIG ECONOMY SITES
“Traditional” freelancing sites are increasingly listing opportunities related to climate and ESG work.
Academic Routes
Universities and other academic institutions provide a great opportunity to dedicate a significant amount of time towards the research and development of new ideas (technological, social, or economic) that can greatly improve our understanding and ability to address our various planetary crises.
These sites aggregate listings for funded PhD opportunities, post-doctoral positions, and other academia-oriented roles:
Communities
Finally we’d like to close with a few recommendations for communities that you can freely join to interact with other people on a similar journey and be kept up to date with job opportunities as they arise.
These include Work on Climate, ClimateAction.tech, and Denizen.
Education
Our own courses are designed to help you gain the skills, mindset, and networks to stand a better chance of joining the climate economy… as well as doing your job better.
If you’re interested in our courses you may book a call with us or apply to join our next cohort.
