Going beyond Sustainability

Sustainability isn’t sustainable - regeneration is sustainable.

This idea is at the foundation of our work at RegenIntel. Getting rid of fossil fuel use alone will not end global warming - we have to change everything. Even if “sustainability” in its current form achieves the Sustainable Development Goals, it will still not create a truly equitable system for all. These targets and goals represent the minimum that needs to be done to live with dignity and joy within our planetary boundaries.

“Sustainability” might be the best we can do in our current system, but we have to go even further to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals and create a new regenerative future that benefits all life.

In its current form, sustainability has focused on tweaking our current system to ensure it is maintained within real planetary boundaries. This is an admirable enough goal, but does not fundamentally change the system itself to ensure all people and all life benefit in equitable ways now and into the future.

To do so requires us to shift the whole system to a regenerative model and see the holistic, interconnected, and intergenerational nature of our existence alongside all of Earth’s biodiversity. This is the model that we have to create in the world and is exactly why RegenIntel exists.

We need to become planet-positive as a species. A planet-positive species is one where human societies support, establish, and improve the ecosystems and natural cycles upon which all life depends.

We have the tools to do so, and it’s time that we learn how to use them.

By embracing a regenerative future, we must prioritize solutions that have cascading benefits, addressing multiple social, environmental, and economic challenges at once. We need to transition from a linear, extractive economy to a regenerative one.

It is essential to recognize and celebrate the diverse, innovative minds working to address climate change and create a regenerative future. From young climate activists to seasoned experts, their voices and ideas are integral to driving change at a global scale.

We must also consider the importance of collaboration and coalition-building in our efforts. By working together across sectors and disciplines, we can amplify our impact and create lasting, meaningful change. Partnerships between governments, businesses, NGOs, and communities are crucial for implementing effective solutions that address the complex challenges we face.

Furthermore, it's vital to integrate social and environmental justice into our work. A regenerative future must be inclusive and equitable, ensuring that marginalized communities are not left behind in the transition to a sustainable, resilient world.

As we embark on this journey towards regeneration, let's be inspired by the potential for transformation and the promise of a better future for all. Together, we can create a world where people and the planet thrive in harmony.
